Psychotria elata is a stunning botanical wonder of tropical flora known as “hot lip plant” or “hooker’s lip plant”, which is indigenous to the rainforests of Costa Rica, Ecuador, and many other nations in Central and South America. .

What makes this plant special are its leaves, which look like bracts. These bracts have two lips that mimic human lips. This striking feature attracts pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies.

The vibrant color of the bracts and their juicy texture give them the appearance of ripe fruit. This attracts pollinators, including hummingbirds and butterflies. As they explore, they may transfer pollen from one flower to another. Although star-shaped and small, the actual flowers do not attract as much attention as the showy bracts.

More notable than the flowering of the plant, according to the CGTNare the bracts, which are white and fragrant and usually emerge from the “red hot” core of the bracts between December and March.

The plant is given as a sign of affection to loved ones in Central America, especially on Valentine’s Day. Locals also use its bark and leaves to treat a variety of ailments, including skin irritation.

Unfortunately, the plant’s continued death can be attributed to both climate change and deforestation. Therefore, it is essential that additional care and protection be provided to maintain the life of this endangered species and prevent us from having to say goodbye.
