Understanding the patient makes a difference in healthcare

to the editor: Thank you for printing the opinion piece on AI in medicine (“The crucial medical question that AI will never be able to answer” July 8). As a retired critical care nurse, I think this is one of the best discussions I have read about healthcare decision making. Understanding what the individual wants, needs, and can tolerate makes the difference between adequate or inadequate care.

In the meantime, the Howard Zinn op-ed is important in reminding people to look for facts and ask questions at all levels of government, from local to national (“Howard Zinn talked about this moment, even decades ago.” July 8). The reminder to not lose hope is certainly necessary these days. We can only hope that the next president is an honest person who respects the law. It is not a fact.

I'm just grateful for the Los Angeles Times.
