To the editor: I am deeply concerned about the proposal of Mayor Karen Bass to eliminate the Youth Development Department (“Mayor Bass seeks the shutter department that serves the young people of the city.” May 1). This department plays a vital role in supporting the young people of our city through programs such as the Youth Council, the Youth Summit and the Youth Exhibition, which provide essential opportunities for civic commitment, employment and personal development. Dismantling this department could significantly reduce services for young Angels, particularly those in unattended communities.
While I understand that the city's need to address a substantial budget deficit, addressing an apartment directly investing in our future generations seems counterproductive. Consolidating youth services in broader agencies can dilute their effectiveness and overlook the unique needs of our young people. I urge city officials to reconsider this decision and prioritize the well -being and development of our young residents.
