The charges against Combs were not immediately clear as his attorney criticized an “unfair” prosecution.
Sean “Diddy” Combs, the American rapper and music producer, has been arrested in New York after being indicted by a grand jury.
The charges Combs was arrested on Monday were not immediately clear.
Combs' attorney, Marc Agnifilo, issued a statement expressing disappointment at the authorities' decision to pursue “unfair prosecution” of the rap mogul.
“Combs is a music icon, a self-taught entrepreneur, a loving family man and a proven philanthropist who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, doting on his children and working to uplift the black community. He is a flawed person, but he is not a criminal,” Agnifilo said.
“Mr. Combs must be given credit for doing nothing but cooperating with this investigation and voluntarily moving to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve judgment until you have all the facts.”
In March, federal authorities raided Combs' properties in Los Angeles and Miami.
Combs has also been accused of sexual assault and misconduct in several lawsuits against multiple women since November, when his ex-girlfriend Casandra Ventura sued him for alleged physical and sexual abuse.
Combs and Ventura settled the suit the day after it was filed, without disclosing the terms of the agreement.
Combs has vehemently denied the allegations in the lawsuits against him, saying his accusers were seeking “a quick payday.”
In May, Combs found himself embroiled in controversy again when CNN aired leaked video of the rapper violently grabbing, dragging and kicking Ventura in 2016.
Combs publicly apologized after the video was posted, calling his actions “inexcusable.”
Combs, who has also used the names Puff Daddy and Love, became one of the most successful producers in rap history after founding Bad Boy in the early '90s.
During his three-decade career, he has worked with a number of highly successful artists, including The Notorious BIG, Mary J Blige and Usher.
Combs has also ventured into business ventures outside of music, including a fashion brand, a fragrance brand and a range of alcoholic beverages.
