to the editor: I enjoyed reading the recent article about the improvements along the Los Angeles River and how it has increasingly become an open environment for recreation and escape from our crowded urban environment (“As Los Angeles transforms into a makeshift stage for nature-loving musicians, fears of gentrification persist.” July 13).
For me, one of the joys of Los Angeles is riding my beach bike along the nearly 10-mile stretch on the south side of the river that has a lighted paved road from the Victory Boulevard overpass in Burbank to the I-5 freeway overpass. You can easily travel from there to downtown Los Angeles. In between, the city has in recent years created parks and allowed good restaurants to open, with great entertainment popping up. This has also led to the inevitable gentrification of homeowners, for better or worse.
The solution to addressing low-income residents being displaced from the Riverside is clearly for the city to create affordable housing there, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be high on their list of priorities.
