Princess Diana's 'trauma' after King Charles gave 'bizarre' response about love

Princess Diana was left in shock after King Charles gave a bizarre response to news of her engagement.

The former Princess of Wales appeared excited when asked by the media about her nuptials when Charles gave a bemused response about his love for his bride-to-be.

In Diana: In Her Own Words, she said: “We had this awful interview the day we announced our engagement. And this ridiculous [reporter] “He said, 'Are you in love?' I thought that was a difficult question. So I said, 'Yes, of course we are.' And Charles turned around and said, 'Whatever love means.' And that completely baffled me. I thought it was a strange answer. It traumatised me.”

Charles proposed to Diana in 1981. It is revealed that the now King did not make a grand gesture when he asked for her hand in marriage.

In a Channel 5 documentary, Charles and Di: The Truth Behind Their Wedding, royal biographer Christopher Wilson said: “He didn't pick her up or hug her or do any of the things you would do when you propose to someone you love. He called his mother just to say, 'I've done it. You asked me to marry someone and I arranged it.' What he did was he finally found himself a wife.”
