Colorado authorities said officials found two bodies with gunshot wounds in a dormitory at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, without releasing details about the victims, calling it a homicide.

Police said the incident did not appear to be a murder-suicide and that both deaths were being investigated as homicides.

Officials said Friday night that they would continue to develop and follow investigative leads and would provide additional information when it becomes available.

University officials were informed Friday about the shooting early in the morning, the Colorado Springs Police Department said.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Colorado Springs Police Department said they “do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.”

Police also said in the post: “This incident does not appear to be a murder-suicide and both deaths are being investigated as homicides.”

The university spokesperson said the campus lockdown, which was imposed after the incident, has been lifted, however, classes were closed for the rest of the day.

While expressing her grief, University President Jennifer Sobanet told reporters at a news conference: “We are in shock as we process this tragic loss of two lives. My heart breaks for the victims of the senseless violence of today”.

Police said in a statement: “While the coroner will make the official determination of the cause and manner of death, these deaths are being investigated as a homicide. We are in the early stages of piecing together what happened. We are working diligently and searching in all possibilities.”

Authorities did not reveal the identities of the victims.

“I am closely monitoring the situation on the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs campus and have spoken with our Department of Public Safety and CU President Todd Saliman to offer state support where needed,” said Governor Jared Polis in a statement.
