Three missing after landslide in Swiss Alps as heavy rain causes flash floods | Flood news

Swiss President Viola Amherd says she is shocked by the extent of the damage caused by the bad weather.

Three people are missing after heavy storms and rain caused a landslide in southeastern Switzerland.

A woman was rescued alive after being buried by a landslide in the Alpine valley of Misox, in Graubünden. The rescue operation for the other three continues on Saturday.

The rockfall affected a group of homes in the municipality of Lostallo. Rescuers searched all day with excavators and specially trained dogs. William Kloter of the Swiss police, who is leading the rescue operation, told local media that he hopes to find the three missing alive.

Swiss President Viola Amherd said she was shocked by the extent of the damage caused by the bad weather.

“My thoughts are with those affected. I thank the emergency personnel for their tireless efforts in this difficult situation,” Amherd said on X.

Elsewhere in Switzerland, the popular tourist destination of Zermatt in the southern canton of Valais, near the iconic Matterhorn mountain, remains inaccessible. Heavy rains and melting snow have caused the Mattervispa River to overflow, leaving the town isolated.

Dramatic videos showed the small river flowing through Zermatt turning into a flash, muddy flood, partially submerging the streets of the popular ski resort.

The Matterhorn-Gotthard railway stopped operations due to no alternative transportation, the railway company announced on social media.

Emergency services in the canton of Valais are on high alert due to the level of the Rhône River, which peaked on Saturday. Authorities evacuated 230 residents, especially the municipality of Chippis, located on the left bank of the Rhône River.
