Michelle Obama, wife of former US President Barack Obama, is heartbroken that her mother Marian Lois Shields Robinson, 86, died on Friday, leaving the former first family in mourning.
“My mother, Marian Robinson, was my rock, always there for whatever I needed,” Michelle Obama said in a post on X. “She was the same constant support for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share that she passed away today.” .
Michelle often gave Marian Lois Shields, who raised her in a small apartment on Chicago's South Side, credit for instilling values and discipline in her when her family lived at 7436 S Euclid Ave.
The former first lady's father, Fraser Robinson, operator of the city of Chicago's water filtration plant near Navy Pier, and a Democratic district captain, died in 1991.
After spending time at the White House, Mrs. Robinson returned to Chicago, where she died on Friday. The family did not reveal the cause of death or her funeral arrangements.
On Mother's Day this year, Michelle Obama posted: “My mom has always been my rock and I am so grateful for all the ways she continues to support my family. “She has taught me a lot over the years and I feel very lucky to be able to pass that same wisdom on to my own daughters.”
