A Maryland boy is lucky to be alive after he was attacked by a shark Monday during a shark tank expedition at a Bahamas resort. Fox News reported.

The 10-year-old's vacation turned into a nightmare after he was attacked by a shark around 4 p.m. EST on Paradise Island while the boy was “participating in a shark tank expedition at a local resort,” according to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

The young explorer, according to preliminary reports, was bitten on his right leg as a result of the dangerous attack and was taken to the hospital where he is currently in stable condition.

Police have not identified the Maryland boy and said the circumstances of the incident are under investigation.

The 10-year-old shark attack comes just a month after a Massachusetts woman was killed while vacationing in the Bahamas.

Earlier, Lauren Erickson Van Wart, 44, was seriously injured after being bitten by a shark while paddleboarding with a relative less than a mile off the western tip of New Providence Island.

According to Gavin Naylor, program director of the International Shark Attack File in Florida, between 30 and 40 species of sharks live around the Bahamas. However, the Caribbean reef shark, bull shark, tiger shark, and blacktip shark have the highest frequency of stings.

“Usually it's an accidental bite. They think it's something else,” he said. “Every once in a while, they point at people, and it's very intentional.”
