US President Joe Biden has announced that the government will cancel $6 billion in student debt for 78,000 public service workers as the election approaches.
Forbes reported that Biden's decision was the latest move to reduce student loans through relief after the Supreme Court refused to grant blanket debt relief.
Since Biden took office in 2021, he has provided student loan relief to about four million people, totaling $144 billion.
The around 78,000 borrowers who will benefit from Biden's measure include teachers, nurses, firefighters and Americans who perform other public functions.
In more than three years, the Biden administration has forgiven loans for 870,000 public service workers, thousands more compared to the Trump administration.
It is not yet clear when the loans of those affected will be settled. However, the president said, “I will not stop using every tool at my disposal to provide student debt relief to more Americans.”
