At least 21 people died in a fire at a Delhi hotel on Wednesday, police said, in one of the worst such incidents in the national capital in recent years.
The hotel was located in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar, they said, a predominantly residential area popular with students and young professionals.
So far, at least 40 people have been rescued, police said.
Television images showed a building in flames, smoke billowing and charred exteriors as residents watched from a narrow street nearby.
They also showed two people jumping from an upper floor of the building.
“There was reportedly a restaurant functioning on the ground floor of the building… the fire was most likely related to that restaurant,” local administration official Jitendra Kumar told reporters.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the loss of life was tragic and expressed his deepest condolences to those who lost their loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
