A fire devours a Japan Airlines plane with almost 400 passengers on board

A Japan Airlines plane burst into flames upon landing on a runway at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Tuesday afternoon, according to images broadcast by the Japanese public broadcaster. NHK.

The images showed flames coming out of the windows of the plane and below them the runway was also on fire.

The plane, which had taken off from Sapporo, collided with a coast guard plane, NHK said, citing authorities, who added that all 379 passengers and crew on board were evacuated.

“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage,” the airline said, according to a NHK report.

The BBC reported that the plane, Japan Airlines Flight 516, took off from New Chitose Airport at 4:00 p.m. local time (07:00 GMT) and was scheduled to land in Haneda at 5:40 p.m.

Television images show several fire trucks at the scene as smoke and flames billow from the plane.

Additionally, one of the five Japanese Coast Guard members aboard the Coast Guard plane reportedly escaped. Reuterswhile others are currently missing.
