Galaxy unpacked has been and disappeared, but we are still enjoying the brightness of the Samsung Galaxy S25 alignment: See our practical review of Samsung Galaxy S25, Practical Review of Samsung Galaxy S25 Plus and complete review of Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra Ultra for our first impressions of The three new devices.
There was, of course, a new addition to the line of three phones that we expect from Samsung: the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, which revives an nickname that the company used previously for devices with edge screens to edge to edge. Now, the designation of 'Edge' is apparently a reference to the thinness of this new phone.
And a thin phone is. Although Samsung has not yet revealed the official specifications on the Galaxy S25 EDGE, the device is of such a slender construction that its dual chambers have to rest on a high bump, and then excel to the further to fit in the rear polished panel. The Galaxy S25 Edge is visibly thinner than the already impressive S25 Plus, his closest brother in the pre -existing alignment.
The senior news editor of Techradar, Mark Wilson, is not convinced of the design of the new phone, writing in a recent characteristic that the Galaxy S25 Edge represents “the most lazy interpretation of telephone innovation.” However, I believe that the S25 Edge deserves an opportunity to prove his worth – although I share some of my dear doubts of my colleague.
The S25 edge will require some commitments. We simply cannot expect Samsung to fit the raw hardware power of its most bulky flagships on a telephone that is rumored that has only 6.4 mm thick. All I really hope is that Samsung makes the right decisions; That it focuses on efficiency so that the necessarily smaller battery is not very taxed, ensures that the durability is maintained and, this is a range, opts for a teleobjective chamber for the second of the two pits mounted on the rear.
However, I would be happy to see that S25 Edge will reach production with any combination of specifications. The reason I am already so indulgent is that this new Galaxy phone reminds me of the first fold of Samsung Galaxy in 2019, which launched the folding phone industry despite not being visibly without polishing. I am optimistic that Samsung can be about to launch another niche segment of the telephone market with the S25 Edge.
Flashback or complete revival?
It may seem difficult to believe in the current world of bulky, heavy and powerful flagships such as the Ultra S25, the iPhone 16 Pro Max and OnePlus 13, but not long ago that thinness was an important priority for telephone manufacturers . The first smartphones were positively resounding for current standards, and in the first ten years of the useful life of the industry, I would find main speakers who speak extensively about the millimeters shaved with each posterior launch.
However, this was not exempt from inconveniences: Apple exceeded on the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, which was sent with weak designs that folded easily, a phenomenon called “bless” by frantic media. These thin phones could not contain very large batteries, and they had limited options for cooling.
It is not surprising that we have seen an investment of the trend in the following years, which accelerated in the 2020 decade as telephone hardware began to take some real jumps in the departments of power, longevity and multitars. The current design language of emblematic phones admits this: square shapes with a lot of space for the internal vanguard.
The S25 Edge could be a unique call return for these previous times, but as I mentioned in my recent look at the insinuated multiple phone Samsung, Samsung is a giant technological brand that does not tend to introduce single -generation products. Unless the s25 edge bombs were hard, we are likely to see a S26 Edge and S27 Edge in the coming years.
And if you believe in the sources of wise of the rumor factory, Apple is also working in a thinned version of the iPhone 17, tentatively entitled the iPhone 17 Air. I think we are seeing a complete resurgence of thin smartphones and with ergonomically led in their own lane, in a conventional telephone market branch similar to folding phones.
Thin phones are good, actually
At this point, you may wonder why this is good, I think it is two main factors. First, modern phones are, in general, large and somewhat heavy devices, so it is not bad light. Although large phones such as the iPhone 16 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra are lighter compared to their predecessors, they are still remarkably strong: the S25 Edge could offer some relief.
Of course, part of the weight of modern flagships is at the service of a better performance, which leads to my second point. By turning the phones focused on ergonomics in their own category, telephone manufacturers will be freer of specializing their flagships for power and thin phones for portability. We saw that something similar happened with folding and multithale phones: most slabs devices do not focus on the ability to run multiple applications despite having a lot of space on the screen, since this is better handled by the folds of brochures style. Soon we could see a division between ergonomics and performance, with great profits obtained in both categories as a result.
The reasons I have explained above could mean more for the user's experience, but I also congratulate Samsung for simply doing something different. From a personal perspective, I like it when phone manufacturers become rare. We are in a time of design hegemony; Each phone is a rounded rectangle with an excellent screen, cameras, drums, works. The S25 EDGE dates back to the days of the original OPPO X, with its emerging camera, the LG wing with rotating screen or even the colorful iPhone 5C, simply being a bit unusual.
So, we have it there. The S25 EDGE can be a bit difficult around the edges, well, when it is launched, but with sufficient consumer support, I think it could crush new innovations for the smartphone market. I am not giving Samsung Carte Blancche to get a mediocre phone: I prefer to see that the edge wins a place on our list of the best Samsung phones, but I am willing to forgive a false step or two if it means witnessing the beginning of something genuinely new .
