Apple has stuck with pretty much the same camera design on its Pro iPhones since the launch of the iPhone 11 Pro, but with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, there could be a big change.
This is according to the leaker. majin buwho – posting on X (formerly Twitter) – claimed that the iPhone 16 Pro (and presumably the iPhone 16 Pro Max too) will have a triangular camera block.
Or rather, it will retain the square block of the iPhone 15 Pro, but the lenses inside will be housed in a raised triangle, rather than protruding from the square individually. You can see what this could look like in the post below.

You can see that the flash and LiDAR scanner are inside the square but not inside the triangle, which only houses the trio of lenses.
It seems a bit strange here, however, this image is only for “demonstration purposes”, and the information received by Bu is simply that the design “will be in the shape of a triangle” and “will be more similar to a razor”, as Like the guy in the photo. So even if this leak is accurate, the exact design may differ a bit from this image.
This design change would apparently “allow for more cameras to be added to the module in the future,” although it's unclear how a raised triangle would help with that.
An unlikely update
However, we would take this leak with a lot of salt. The source has a mixed record, stating that “I have no way to verify if this information is 100% accurate or true.”
More damningly, another leak (@URedditor) responded by stating that this design is not real, and then went on to say “unless they have developed an alternative backplate design in complete secrecy, possible but highly unlikely.”
So now we suspect that this will not be the design of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max cameras. But it certainly seems like it's time to update the camera design, so we wouldn't rule it out completely either.
We probably won't be sure of the design of the iPhone 16 Pro for a while yet, as it will likely arrive in September, along with the rest of the iPhone 16 lineup. But we'll surely hear many more rumors and leaks before then.
