UEFA Conference League 2026 final: preview
In its 102-year history, Rayo has won nothing more than a handful of promotions. In fact, this UECL final is the first final they have reached in any competition. And they're here under a rookie coach who should have left a long time ago. Íñigo Pérez, then one of Andoni Iraola's assistants, was due to follow him to Bournemouth four years ago, but was not granted a work permit. Instead, he was handed the reins when Iraola's replacement was fired.
Describing Iraola as someone difficult to follow would be an understatement, but Pérez is already alongside his great former mentor in the Vallecas pantheon. He will be alone if Rayo wins the title on Wednesday.
There are parallels with Palace, who won their first major title 12 months ago, in their 119th year. Oliver Glasner is clearly Iraola-esque in his talent for doing more with less by developing players in a clearly defined system that suits them, and a year on from that momentous FA Cup triumph, the Austrian is about to lead the club to a third major silverware in his final act.
Palace took time to adapt to the European stage, and their 10th place finish in the league stage required a play-off for a place in the last 16. However, a resounding victory over Fiorentina has reassured them. With nine goals, Ismaila Sarr is the Conference League's top scorer, while Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta are being chased by Europe's biggest clubs.
Rayo's path to the final has been calmer, in part because the team as a whole shares the scoring load, which suits Pérez very well. With four goals, Alemao is El Matagigantes' top scorer in the competition, as the Brazilian number 9 has had assists from veteran midfielders Álvaro García and Isi Palazón.
While this is Palace's first European final, Glasner won the Europa League with Frankfurt and guided the Eagles to FA Cup and Community Shield glory with victories over Man City and Liverpool. Rayo have never before contested a final of any kind, but have impressed in the big games this season, drawing Barcelona and Real Madrid and beating Villarreal and Atlético. For both clubs, the UECL title is their only route back to Europe next season.
