Under Trump, science and health in the US are in a horrible place

to the editor: Among the attacks on science mentioned in the column is a proposed rule that “would effectively make all applications for scientific grants subject to the oversight of politically appointed commissioners” (“The right's attack on science reaches its lowest point, but it could get worse” June 11). This is like letting the fox into the henhouse.

This continues the administration's attacks on scientific and health research, including drastic cuts to the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. As columnist Michael Hiltzik analyzes, there could be serious implications for the health of our citizens.

Having President Trump, who has called climate change a hoax and generally disrespects science, and his Republican sycophants dictating how science should be conducted is horrifying.

to the editor: As Hiltzik points out, scientific research is under attack on all fronts, from academia to government agencies and now even professional scientific organizations like the American Diabetes Association.

Scientific research is what makes a population healthy. Albert Einstein said it best: “One thing I have learned in a long life: that all our science, compared to reality, is primitive and childish and, yet, it is the most precious thing we have.”
