Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley on Saturday questioned Donald Trump's mental fitness after he appeared to confuse her with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi while discussing the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. .
“Last night, Trump was at a rally and he keeps mentioning to me multiple times why I didn't take security measures during the riot at the Capitol. Why didn't I handle January 6th better? He wasn't even in DC on January 6th. He wasn’t in office then,” Haley said.
“They say he got confused. That she was talking about something else. That she was talking about Nancy Pelosi,” the former South Carolina governor added.
Haley told a crowd of voters in Keene, New Hampshire: “The concern I have is… I'm not saying anything derogatory, but when it comes to the pressures of a presidency, we can't have anyone else to question.” if they are mentally fit to do so.”
His comments come after Trump said at a campaign rally in New Hampshire: “By the way, they never report on the crowd on January 6th. You know, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley…did you know they destroyed all the information? All the evidence, everything, erased and destroyed everything? All of that, for many things, like Nikki Haley being in charge of security, we offered her 10,000 people, soldiers, national guards, whatever they want. “They rejected it.”
A senior Trump campaign adviser on Saturday addressed the former president's comments confusing Haley with Pelosi in a Saturday X post.
“Nancy…Nikki…is a distinction without a difference,” Chris LaCivita posted.
Beyond confusing Haley with Pelosi, Trump's claim that the House speaker is responsible for the security of the US Capitol is not accurate, as CNN previously verified.
