Serena Williams slams Harrison Butker as she celebrates women's sport at ESPYs

Just when the media storm over Harrison Butker was calming down, the ESPY Awards brought it rain again.

The Kansas City Chiefs kicker sparked controversy when he gave a commencement speech at Benedictine College in which he encouraged female graduates to embrace being “homemakers.” The speech received a lot of criticism as it almost became a rallying cry for women to pursue career opportunities and not be afraid to do so.

On Thursday night at the 2024 ESPY Awards, tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams and actress Quinta Brunson took the stage to celebrate women's sports, which have dramatically increased in popularity.

“You can enjoy women's sport like any other sport, because it's sport,” Venus joked on stage.

But as Venus spoke, her younger sister seemed unable to contain her laughter.

“Except for you, Harrison Butker, we don't need you,” Serena said, as the kicker stood in the presence.

Brunson added: “Absolutely not. Never.”

The jab got a nice reaction from the crowd.

She also criticized the LGBTQ community and President Biden for their stance on abortion, adding: “Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values and media, all stem from the pervasiveness of the disorder.”

Butker was unapologetic about his speech when he made another public appearance a couple of weeks later, saying that “it wasn't the people, but Jesus Christ that I was trying to please.”

“If it wasn't clear that many hate eternal Catholic values, it is now,” Butker added, noting that he had become a “more polarizing” figure because of his strong beliefs.
