One person was killed and three were wounded in a shooting at a Northern California high school where a graduation ceremony was held Wednesday night, authorities said.
Police responded to a shooting in the Fairfield High School parking lot at 7:15 p.m., Fairfield Police Officer Michelle Belyea said at an afternoon news conference. One victim was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds and three others were transported to a hospital in unknown condition, he said.
So far no arrests have been made and no information is available on any suspects.
“It's a very scary incident when something like this happens, especially at the end of a school event,” Belyea said. “So obviously we just want everyone to be safe.”
Alma Hernandez, mayor of Suisun City, California, in Solano County, reported shortly after 8 p.m. that there was an active shooter at Fairfield High School's Schafer Stadium, where Sem Yeto High School's graduation was held.
Amanda Prieto, who lives nearby, said she heard the gunshots from her backyard.
“I quickly realized how close that rapid fire was,” Prieto told local television news station KCRA. “I looked over the fence and people were screaming and running across the parking lot. It was horrible.”
The superintendent of the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District said a shooting occurred after graduation ceremonies ended.
“Police are on campus and … this is an active investigation,” the superintendent said. Jennifer Sachs in a statement. “Our thoughts are with our Sem Yeto community.”
Sachs said classes would begin Thursday, with a mental health team and district staff on site to provide support.
