In a statement, the Rubin said it opposes trafficking in stolen or looted cultural property, has not knowingly acquired looted objects and remains committed to carrying out investigation of provenance of its entire collection, which could lead to its repatriation.

Qiuyuhong Lu, a former Rubin scholar and part of the Himalayan diaspora, visited the museum with her sketchbook to make some of the latest drawings of the items on display. He said he has mixed emotions about the calls for repatriation.

“Morally speaking, I would love to have them back,” he said. “But at the same time, it also poses a difficult situation for people like me. I have never been to the place where my heritage is from. If I want to go see him, where will he be?
