Travellers! Beware of the 10 Craziest Flight Routes in the World

Which airline routes in the world experience the most turbulence? – Discard

Last week, air turbulence proved fatal for two separate flights in two separate cases, resulting in the death of one passenger and injuries to more than 100.

Geoff Kitchen, a British tourist, died after being seriously injured during the turbulence while embarking on a six-week holiday to Singapore from London with his wife last Tuesday.

Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 had plummeted 6,000 feet in just five minutes, while carrying 140 passengers and crew members, most of whom were injured and hospitalized after making an emergency landing in Bangkok.

Days later, 12 people were injured aboard a Qatar Airlines flight from Doha to Dublin on Sunday after the plane experienced air turbulence over Turkey.

After these incidents, experts released the 10 most turbulent routes in the world, which are not on the list below.

They broke down data from hundreds of thousands of long-haul flights made in 2023 and determined the routes by calculating eddy dissipation rates (EDRs) that are calculated by scanning the turbulent air currents on planes.

Here is the complete list of the world's most turbulent flights:

  • Santiago (SCL) – Santa Cruz (VVI)
  • Almaty (ALA) – Bishkek (FRU)
  • Lanzhou (LHW) – Chengdu (CTU)
  • Centrair (ONG) – Sendai (SDJ)
  • Milan (MXP) – Geneva (GVA)
  • Lanzhou (LHW) – Xianyang (XIY)
