Parts of Karachi receive light to heavy rains after days of scorching heat

KARACHI: Heavy and light rains lashed different areas of Karachi on Friday after residents of the port city experienced scorching temperatures in the past few days, with two deaths reported in the port city due to heat stroke the previous day.

The areas that received rain include Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Surjani, North Karachi, New Karachi, Malir, Cantt, Mosmiyat, Shahrae Faisal, Bahadurabad, Tipu Sultan, Gulshan-e-Maymar and Gadap and others.

The metropolis has been in the grip of a heatwave for the past few days, making life miserable for the masses, who are facing unscheduled power cuts for hours despite assurances from the power utility company.

The normal temperature in the city in July, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), has been 27.9 degrees Celsius and Tuesday night was the second hottest this year after July 1, when the temperature was also 32 degrees Celsius.

Two days earlier, temperatures in the port city had reached a sweltering 40.5°C, when in reality it felt like a scorching 56°C.

In a weather forecast today, the Met Office said monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea were penetrating the southern parts of the country and a westerly wave was affecting the upper parts of the country.

According to forecast, rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in Sindh, south Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, north-east Balochistan, Potohar region, Islamabad and Kashmir.

Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places in southern Punjab and lower Sindh during the period.
