Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently spoke about the hype around Barbie and oppenheimer last year.
In an interview with a New York Times Reporter Ted claimed that the films would have “enjoyed as large an audience” on the streamer as they did in theaters.
When asked what type of content suits Netflix, he responded: “I don't think there is a clear answer because the best version of something may work very well for Netflix, but it just hasn't worked to date. There are some obvious ones, like we don't publish breaking news and that kind of thing, because I think there are many other outlets for that. People don't look for us for that.”
Next, the journalist highlighted the theatrical releases of Barbie and oppenheimer they ended up grossing $1.44 billion and $951 million worldwide, respectively.
“Are there things that just don't seem to be within your reach right now?” the journalist asked, to which Ted responded: “Both movies would be great for Netflix. “They definitely would have enjoyed an equally large audience on Netflix.”
“And so I don't think there's any reason to believe that certain types of movies work or don't work. There is no reason to believe that the movie itself is better on any screen size for all people,” she added.
