King Charles's ambitious plans for the Royal Lodge once his younger brother, Prince Andrew, leaves.
Her Majesty, who is set to oust the Duke of York from the royal estate after his infamous sex scandal, wants to spend on repairs and renovations.
It could even cut the £4m a year it pays to stay afloat.
A source close to the property said: “It makes sense for Royal Lodge to be handed back to the Crown Estates, who can afford to pay for much-needed repairs and renovations.
“It could then be rented out to make money for themselves, the King's coffers and the country, rather than being a drain on everyone's resources.”
Meanwhile, one property expert said: “A rent of £1 million a year is not unreasonable for a house of that size with incredible royal connections.”
