Iranian and Turkish presidents congratulate Shehbaz Sharif on becoming prime minister

The presidents of Iran and Turkey congratulated Shehbaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on being elected the country's prime minister for the second time. Radio Pakistan reported on Monday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a telephone conversation, facilitated Shehbaz, expressing his belief that relations between Ankara and Islamabad will deepen and expand during the new period.

The call also addressed Turkey-Pakistan relations, as well as regional and global issues.

Meanwhile, President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi also congratulated Shehbaz Sharif on his election as Prime Minister of Pakistan.

In his congratulatory message, he expressed his determination to further strengthen the relationship between both brotherly Islamic countries.

He expressed the hope that the new government would do everything possible to improve the people and also the country. Raisi said both countries will work together to strengthen bilateral relations.

A day earlier, the National Assembly elected Shehbaz Sharif as the country's 24th elected prime minister after securing 201 votes with the support of his party and seven other allies.

He enjoyed the support of seven other parties i.e. Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Pakistan Muslim League-Zia. (PML-Z), Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) and National Party (NP).

His opponent, Omar Ayub Khan of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), could only receive 92 votes in the election.

This is the second consecutive time that Shehbaz has been elected chief minister. The new prime minister will be sworn in today.

He was elected Pakistan's 23rd prime minister after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was ousted from power through a no-confidence motion in 2022.

He remained Prime Minister from April 11, 2022 until August 2023, handing the reins of government to an interim structure.
