A guide to Dua Lipa's Latin American covers

Since early November, British pop star Dua Lipa has performed a series of concerts in Latin America in support of her 2024 album, “Radical Optimism.”

In addition to singing her many hits, the Grammy winner has included nightly versions of songs associated with the country she features. Since then, many of his performances have gone viral on social media, with much fanfare.

As her tour concludes Friday at the GNP Seguros Stadium in Mexico City, here's a rundown of the many Spanish and Portuguese covers Lipa has performed over the past month.

Argentina

Her first show of the Latin American leg was at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires on November 7 and Lipa marked the occasion by singing a cover of Argentine rock band Soda Stereo's 1990 mega hit, “De Música Ligera.”

“I learned that rock music is very popular here,” Lipa told the Buenos Aires crowd in Spanish before the cover. “I feel like everyone knows this song and if you know it, sing it.”

In her second and last show in the Argentine capital, the “Don't Start Now” artist dug deep into her musical bag and released a cover of the song “Tu Misterioso Someone” by the Argentine electropop band Miranda!.

Chili

On November 11, Lipa gave her first concert at Chile's National Stadium in Santiago, where she surprised the crowd with her performance of “Tu Falta de Querer” by Chilean singer Mon Laferte.

After the lipa cover video toured social media, Laferte revealed that the “New Rules” singer invited her to perform at that concert.

“It was a beautiful surprise,” Laferte said of the cover in a Nov. 13 interview with Univision Canada. “I need to confess something… Dua Lipa invited me to sing with her in Chile, but I had to be here [in Las Vegas for the Latin Grammys] and that's why I couldn't go.”

But Laferte was still as surprised as anyone else by Lipa's song choice.

“I didn't know I was going to sing 'Tu Falta de Querer,'” he continued in the interview. “I thought I would have to learn one of her songs. I was very honored when she invited me, but after seeing her sing my song, it was beautiful. Plus, she sang the song in a very sentimental way, you could tell she was living with the lyrics of the song.”

The following night, the “Dance the Night” hitmaker sang La Ley’s 1995 single, “El Duelo,” which may be seen here.

Brazil

Lipa answered the Internet's eternal pleas to “come to Brazil” with her Nov. 15 performance at Morumbis Stadium in São Paulo.

The crowd heard two surprise songs and a surprise guest duo. First, legendary Brazilian singer and percussionist Carlinhos Brown shared the stage with Lipa to perform. Sergio Mendes “Magaleña”. The pop singer surprised viewers by perfectly reciting each Portuguese lyric of the fast-paced and twisted song.

Brown shared a video of their duet on social networks, writing: “Dua, I loved the invitation and all your energy. São Paulo, thank you for the welcome and affection!”

Later that night, Lipa sack the famous Brazilian vocalist Caetano Veloso will sing his hit “Margarida Perfumada”.

A week later, while taking the stage in Rio de Janeiro, Lipa broke a lid from Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66 anthem “Más Que Nada”. Along with João Gilberto's “Garota de Ipanema,” Mendes' 1966 song helped Brazilian music gain international popularity.

Peru

The Peruvian Dua Lipites enjoyed a performance of Chica's hit “Cariñito” by Los Hijos del Sol. The British singer was joined the stage for the cover at the San Marcos Stadium in Lima by the Peruvian cumbia singer Mauricio Mesones.

Colombia

While performing in Bogotá on November 28, the “One Kiss” artist pulled out her best Shakira impression and sang the Colombian idol’s 1995 bop “Antología.”

“BOGOTÁ!!! Thank you for a truly epic night!!! I will be living off this adrenaline for the next few days!!,” Lipa captioned in a instagram post of the performance in Spanish.

Shakira also took to Instagram to express her gratitude for Lipa's tribute.

“It moves me very much to hear my song with Dua's voice, in the same city where I wrote it years ago,” the 48-year-old singer wrote in a November 29 Post. “Do you see how music unites us? A girl from London and another from Barranquilla! Thank you @dualipa! What a delight!”

Mexico

Lipa performed the first of her three scheduled concerts in Mexico City on Monday and made a cover of Luis Miguel's arrangement of “Bésame Mucho”.

“Today I want to pay tribute to a great Mexican composer, Consuelo Velázquez, whose song is linked to the hearts of so many people around the world,” the Golden Globe nominee told the Mexican audience in Spanish before launching her cover. “I love this song because it tells the story that she had never been kissed when she wrote it. And I think that songwriters write their dreams so that they come true.”

For her show in Mexico City on Tuesday night, Lipa brought out Maná frontman Fher Olvera to perform a duet of the Mexican rock band's 1992 hit, “Oye Mi Amor.”

“Tonight we are very lucky because we have someone very special who will sing with us,” Lipa said in Spanish, before Olvera ran onto the stage to enthusiastic applause.

Earlier in the evening, Lipa expressed how grateful she was to conclude her tour in the Mexican capital.

“I can't stop thinking about all the incredible memories I've made this year. Being here with you tonight is the icing on the cake, and it's the only way I wanted to end this tour,” he told the crowd. “Thank you very much Mexico for always supporting me and making me feel at home. I feel a very deep connection with this country and its beautiful people, and I will always, always return.”

The jury is still out on what Lipa will perform as her last cover of her tour, but it will definitely be very Mexican.
