At least four people were killed and several others injured in a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, CNN reported.

Speaking about the incident that occurred on Saturday night (local time), Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said that several shooters fired several shots at a group of people in the Five Points South area.

Two men and a woman were found “unresponsive” by police officers at the scene and were later pronounced dead at the scene, Fitzgerald added.

Noting that no one has been arrested so far in connection with the fatal incident, the police official said the victims, who also included a fourth person who died at a local hospital, were outdoors when they were attacked.

Meanwhile, more shooting victims were identified in the area and transported to local hospitals.

“We have dozens of shooting victims in this area. [….] I'm told at least four of those shooting victims are… [facing] potentially fatal [injuries]”The others have various injuries,” Fitzgerald said.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital spokeswoman Hannah Echols told the outlet the facility was treating at least 11 people injured in the incident.

As police investigate the possibility of multiple shootings, detectives are looking into whether the attackers approached the victims in person or attacked them from a vehicle.

It is not yet clear how many attackers were involved in the incident and what their motive was.

The investigation is being assisted by multiple law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and Birmingham Police are seeking to obtain surveillance footage from nearby businesses.

“Rest assured that we will do everything possible to ensure that we uncover, identify and hunt down those responsible for attacking our people,” the police officer said.

The incident adds to the long list of mass shootings, 403 to be precise, recorded in the country according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive.
