At least 16 people were injured on Wednesday after a massive explosion rocked a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) training center in Irvine, California, during training, US media reported.

The explosion resonated at the Jerry Crowe Regional Tactical Training Center in Irvine shortly before 1:00 p.m. KTLA5 reported citing the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD).

The explosion occurred while OCSD's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team was engaged in a joint training exercise with a bomb squad, authorities said.

As a result of the explosion, 16 SWAT team members were injured, 15 of whom were transported by ambulance to local hospitals for treatment, while one person was able to transport himself.

While the exact nature of everyone's injuries is unknown, KTLA5 reported that some members suffered non-life-threatening injuries to their legs and back, and one person required surgery.

Additionally, at least 13 people experienced dizziness and ringing in the ears. However, no deaths have been reported.

Authorities reported that a boat exploded during an annual joint training exercise. The small building where the explosion occurred was cordoned off with police tape and the exact trigger remains unclear.

“We have two members of our SWAT team who are cross-trained as paramedics and were able to provide assistance immediately,” officials said.

The explosion at the FBI training facility in Irvine, located on the grounds of the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Base, will be investigated by OCSD, along with the FBI.
