Taj Art Gallery displays collection of masterpieces at Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai

Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Art Gallery will participate in the prestigious Mumbai Gallery Weekend with a special display of key pieces from its permanent collection. Titled “A Room with a View”, it is curated by Mortimer Chatterjee and will showcase masterpieces by luminaries Ajay De, Nayanaa Kanodia, Ram Kumar, Murli Lahoti, Jehangir Sabavala and Madhav Satwalekar.

Opening at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2024, the exhibition will run through the weekend and will be open to welcome art enthusiasts, residents, and guests from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. pm every day. Located on the first floor of the Palace, the Art Gallery has been an icon of the city since it opened its doors in the 1960s and again in 2016. Masters like Laxman Shreshtha, Jehangir Sabavala, MF Husain, among others, began their illustrious travels in the world of art from this space.

The Taj’s art collection can largely be attributed to the tasteful acquisitions made by Elizabeth Kerkar and Rodabeh Sawhney in the 1960s and 1970s, a period when abstract art really found its place. Taj strives to be the platform where cultural experiences of the past, present and future coexist in harmony and showcase the true value of Indian heritage.

Ritesh Sharma, CEO, Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, said: “For over six decades, the art gallery at Taj Mahal Palace has remained the core of Mumbai’s art scene. As the hotel celebrates its remarkable milestone of 120 years, we feel immensely proud to showcase our timeless treasures to the discerning public attending the Mumbai Gallery Weekend. Looking ahead, our commitment extends beyond this event to a series of arts-focused programs. Throughout its illustrious history, spanning more than a century, Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace has fostered a long-standing relationship with art. The hotel has a warehouse that houses 4,000 notable works of art, a testament to our continued dedication to preserving, promoting and supporting Indian art and culture.”
