New data from Boomi claims that while 86% of companies have evolved from agent AI pilots to actual production-level deployment, only 34% are confident in the actions their agents are taking.
However, those trust issues don't arise from the intelligence of the model: Boomi argues that data quality, integrations, governance and controls could be to blame.
The research divides respondents into different categories, with the bottom quartile of preparedness called “agent chaos.” Among those in the agent mess, up to 77% are still putting AI agents into production, highlighting a worrying gap.
Trust in AI is entirely in the hands of companies
With more than three in four companies mired in agent chaos still moving forward with their plans, Boomi warns that they could face unexpected costs due to compliance fines, lost customers and operational downtime.
On the other hand, the top quartile was categorized as under “agent control,” and more than half (55%) of them said they have a lot of confidence in their agents' decisions and actions.
Additionally, the report criticizes those caught in the agency mess for focusing on the wrong thing, with about half (51%) prioritizing the maturity of the AI model or tool rather than the true causes of mistrust.
“Agents can only be trusted to act on data that has been properly activated, connected, and governed, and most companies deployed agents before they did that job,” CEO Steve Lucas wrote.
At the end of the day, Boomi's data implies that the pressure to demonstrate AI's value and return on investment could actually lead to premature implementation before the foundation is laid, forcing organizations to play catch-up in a much more inefficient manner.
