Prototypes of what are believed to be the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL have appeared on TikTok, revealing a notable size difference between the two.
The videos of the devices came from the Ukrainian channel PixoPhone, but they seem to have already been deleted. Fortunately, the news site YTechB managed to save them.
The 9To5Google report claims that these are prototypes because of the etchings on the rear panel, which Google uses to identify prototype units.
It's hard to see them, as PixoPhone covered them with a sticker, but you can see the edge of the engravings in certain shots. What's interesting is the presence of the “G” logo, which indicates that the design we see here is close to final release.
Possible specifications
As mentioned above, the first video shows that the Pixel 9 Pro XL is larger than the Pixel 9. It’s not a massive difference in size, though the 9 Pro XL is bulkier than its counterpart. The TikTok videos don’t reveal any specs as they focus on showing off the devices. Previous rumors said the standard Pixel 9’s display would measure 6.2 inches.
The size of the 9 Pro XL is unknown, but 9To5Google claims it’s 6.73 inches. There’s some evidence to back this claim up, such as PixoPhone’s second video, which compares the prototype to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. The two are similar in size, though the S24 Ultra, which has a 6.8-inch display, is slightly larger.
It's worth mentioning that the 9 Pro XL's camera bar is longer than the standard model's. There's enough room for three lenses, an LED bulb for the flash, and what looks like a temperature sensor. The Pixel 8 Pro has a similar array. On the Pixel 9, you only get two lenses and the bulb.
Design Blooms
Going back to the first clip, the PixoPhone shows off other design differences beyond their sizes. The Pixel 9 has a glossy back panel, “while the 9 Pro XL opts for a less fingerprint-prone matte finish.” Interestingly, their respective sides feature the opposite coating.
The edges of the base smartphone have a matte finish, but the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a glossy finish. We're not sure if Google decided to give each device a distinct look in an effort to stand out to prospective buyers.
Of course, there's always the chance that none of the design details seen in these prototypes make it into the final product. Google is set to hold its next Pixel event on August 13, where we're expected to see the tech giant's next generation of hardware. Until then, take any leaks with a grain of salt.
