NYT Strands Today (Game #116): The Answers
The answers to today's Strands game number 116 are…
- CHEESE
- DIP
- COOKIE
- MACARONI
- HAMBURGER
- CHIPS
- SPANGRAM: COMBOMEALS
- My rating: Easy
- My score: Perfect
Here's another puzzle from Strands that will probably be more difficult for those of you not in the US. Two of the pairings here (BURGER and FRIES, and MACaroni and CHEESE) are well known around the world. The other, SAUCE and COOKIES, is not. In fact, the idea of GRAVY and BISCUITS going together in the UK would be repugnant, because to us gravy is a savory meat (or vegetable) sauce, not creamy like the US equivalent is, while biscuits are the which Americans would know as cookies. Mmmmm, put a little more meat sauce on those Oreos, please…
Fortunately, that didn't have an impact on my game today, because I've worked for American websites long enough to know what gravy refers to in this context, plus the other answers were simple enough that I could have figured it out anyway. The spangram was probably the most difficult aspect of this game: I could see MEALS pretty well, but I couldn't solve the COMBO part until quite late in the game.
