NYT Connections Today (Game #538): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game #538 are…
- YELLOW: DANCE STYLES JAZZ, MODERN, SWING, TAP
- GREEN: STEAL LIFT, PALM, POCKET, SLIDE
- BLUE: WORKS WELL ON ACE, CRUSH, NAIL, ROCK
- PURPLE: ___ BALL THROWING CURVE, FAST, KNUCKLE, SCREW
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: 2 errors
Days where I nail purple don't come that often, so I had the pleasure of NAILING IT today. Or maybe I should say ACE. OR CRUSH IT OR ROCK IT. Except no, that group – PERFORMANCE WELL – was the blue one I defaulted to, although I think I would have gotten it if needed.
Instead, the purple one was ___BALL PITCHES, with CURVE, FAST, KNUCKLE, and SCREW, and despite having previously complained about the regularity with which the NYT includes baseball or other primarily US-only sports on Connections, it somehow way I got this. Admittedly, it is among the easiest purple groups; I made a couple of incorrect guesses before I understood it, because SCREW didn't occur to me, but the other three are well known and also appear in my favorite sport, cricket.
Yellow and Green, meanwhile, were pretty easy, making it a reasonably accessible Connections game overall.

- PURPLE: FIRST WORDS FROM THE HBO SHOWS BOARDWALK, curb, game, silicon
What are NYT connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final question since you'll be able to answer it through a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing room.
However, it's a little more complicated than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, be careful with homophones and other puns that could disguise answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
