Novak Djokovic has won here three times (Swiss duo Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka are the only other non-Spanish champions in the last 22 years), but the 24-time Grand Slam winner has battled injury since losing the Australian Open final to Alcaraz earlier this year.
He also has a difficult draw, starting against the great plunderer Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, with Joao Fonseca and Casper Ruud also in his section. Ruud and Daniil Medvedev, both top finalists, have found some form recently, while 2024 runner-up Alexander Zverev hopes to go deeper again.
The women's event is wide open. Top seed Aryna Sabalenka has won three WTA tournaments in 2026, including the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and the Miami Open, but has lost two of her last three matches on clay, putting her chances in doubt.
Elena Rybakina, Sabalenka's winner in the Australian Open final earlier this year, has had her own troubles on clay in recent weeks, but she has a great pedigree to challenge. Four-time champion Iga Świątek cannot be ruled out either, as the Pole has found some form to be seeded third, ahead of defending champion Gauff.
Also keep an eye on Marta Kostyuk and the resurgent Elina Svitolina, who won WTA 1000 clay court events in Madrid and Rome, respectively.
