All good things must come to an end, and unfortunately for Netflix subscribers, that includes the blossoming romance between Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke). He Stops the heart The franchise is coming to an end. heartbreaker forevera feature film instead of a full fourth season.
Like most fans when they first heard the news, I felt cheated. Like Alice Oseman's original graphic novel books, Nick and Charlie's story is best told over time. Two teenagers struggling with their feelings and identities need time to breathe together, let alone without their smorgasbord of friends who also have their own delightful narrative arcs.
I have now watched all 114 minutes of heartbreaker forever – which is the equivalent of about 4.5 standard episodes – I stand corrected. As Nick, Charlie and the gang prepare before going their separate ways to college, a feature film actually reflects their growing maturity and crises of confidence much more appropriately.
News flash, people: Nick and Charlie aren't kids anymore. In fact, the new Netflix movie wastes no time reminding fans as much, with a significant increase in drinking, partying, and outright sex scenes. Tender and wholesome romance can also have an incredibly passionate side.
As a Heartstopper fan who has been in the trenches since the release of the first installment of Oseman's novel, heartbreaker forever It feels like the most satisfying ending that can be offered. No one really wants to be in this position, but all my questions are answered and each character is prepared for their future away from our prying eyes.
Heartstopper Forever offers everything a hardcore fan will want
Look
You'll have to trust my (excellent) judgment on the above statement, because there's no way I'm going to divulge anything even resembling a spoiler in this review. As we know, Nick is preparing to go to college and Charlie is taking on new responsibilities at school.
Elle (Yasmin Finney) has her mind set on big artistic goals, which means her relationship with Tao (William Gao) also has problems. More than the other characters' stories, both relationships touch on the central theme of courage: does teenage romance mean that much anyway?
As the push and pull of college and a vague, discouraging future takes hold, Nick falls apart. Unlike Charlie, who has always been able to effectively communicate how he feels, Nick doesn't know how to describe what's going on in his head. It makes the couple doubt the validity of their love and connection, even though nothing is too wrong from an objective point of view.
It should be frustrating to watch two teenagers self-sabotage, but the reality is overwhelmingly moving. Although the movie is called heartbreaker foreverNothing in life is guaranteed, and I, for one, am tired of pretending that doesn't keep everyone up at night.
As Tao points out, everyone up until this point has assumed that Nick and Charlie are a “perfect couple,” and it's fascinating to see how they tackle real adult problems. Oseman has always had a unique ability to convey the best that love has to offer, and she is equally adept at holding a mirror up to the worst.
On top of this, watching guys get physically intimate, get drunk, and be approached by topless men in leather chaps at the local gay club feels like emotional whiplash in itself. Socially, we seem to have a hard time understanding that young people grow up to do adult things, and Oseman handles these changes with touching sensitivity. There are some fans who have been looking forward to these moments… and reality is spot on.
Anna Maxwell Martin, I love you… but Olivia Colman was better Sarah Nelson
This way we can mark the fact that none of our favorite characters are left hanging and we know exactly what is happening with them and where they are going. Fantastic. However, there are some minor crimes that need to be addressed.
The main thorn in the side heartbreaker foreverOn the other hand, the recast role of Sarah, Nick's mother. I feel like an absolute heathen even mentioning this, watching the new Sarah, Anna Maxwell Martin, she is one of my favorite actresses in the country. But when you remember that you once had Olivia Colman in the same role and she delivered one of the best scenes in the movie. Stops the heartThe story thanks to Nick's departure… well, there is a bit of a bitter taste.
heartbreaker forever is the most narratively and tonally different installment of Nick and Charlie's story to date, but it's still essentially more of the same at its core. Don't get me wrong, this isn't necessarily a negative… but if you came to the movie looking for something new, you obviously won't find it.
Still, Oseman should give himself the highest salary possible for what he has been able to accomplish. It's not easy to deliver an ending that's nothing like what everyone expects, much less make the end result compelling, endearing, and ultimately remarkably satisfying.
heartbreaker forever It really is forever…at least, it's in my house, where I'll be streaming it so much that Netflix might issue a warning. His spirit and generation-defining impact will live on, and that might be the most special achievement the streamer has ever been responsible for.
