Apple is reportedly preparing to launch new Apple AirTags in the first half of 2025, a launch that would be the first update to the device lineup since the launch of the original Apple AirTag in 2021.
This comes via Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and corroborates a report from last year by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says the new AirTag will likely launch with the second-generation ultra-wideband chip that the AirTag launched with. iPhone 15. The chip should allow for more precise location tracking, making it easier to find your lost AirTag. It's also expected to add Apple Vision Pro integration, but it's not yet known what form that will take.
Otherwise, the AirTag 2 doesn't seem willing to reinvent the wheel. The IP67 rating should still provide protection against dust and water, and the battery should still be replaceable. However, this means that the tag may still require a plugin to attach it to a keychain.
This design decision maintains the AirTag's more sophisticated aesthetic, but also makes it a more expensive option compared to rival Bluetooth trackers.
