French Hermès opens artisan-inspired store in Nagoya, Japan

Hermès is pleased to announce the opening of its new store at The Landmark Nagoya Sakae on June 11, 2026. The store is inspired by Japanese culture and textile traditions. Distributed over four light-filled floors with contrasting fabrics and colors, the generous space invites visitors to explore the house's sixteen trades.

The double-height windows framed by a molded glass structure draw attention to the exterior façade, which comes to life thanks to a curtain composed of almost a thousand hand-woven cotton threads, which hang like the fibers of a loom in a wide and elegant movement. This poetic installation, visible through the wide glass surfaces that reflect the changing light, evokes the movement of two galloping horses. As night falls, a new atmosphere sets in: the reflections fade and the store is illuminated from within.

Hermès opened a new four-story store at The Landmark Nagoya Sakae, Japan, on June 11, 2026, drawing inspiration from Japanese culture, weaving traditions and local craftsmanship. Designed by RDAI, the space features textile-inspired interiors, curated artworks and custom installations by Mona Sugata, combining luxury retail with Nagoya's creative heritage and artisanal identity.

The ground floor entrance radiates golden light and a tatami-inspired palette of amber and gray. Guests are greeted by the house's iconic bookplates, Faubourg mosaic and Grecques lighting, revealing the universe of silk flanked by a brilliant perfume and beauty niche with urushi amber lacquered walls. A sculptural stone staircase extends in front of the leather goods area and cascades down the center of the store, its sinewy metal shafts anchoring each level. On the ground floor, the masculine universe unfolds between walls of pleated gray silk inspired by the folds of a traditional Japanese hakama.

On level two, majestic plum and blush tones envelop the vast feminine universe, offset by the texture of stucco and the delicate yuzen technique, as seen in momo flowers. Bright light floods the space, with a large jewelry area outlined by plush purple rugs punctuating the flow. The equestrian and home collections are located on the quiet top floor. Notes of deep blue and indigo, referencing traditional shibori techniques, are balanced by relaxing neutrals and an illuminated sky dome.

Designed by Parisian architecture agency RDAI, the new store showcases regional craftsmanship, the use of local fabrics and Japanese weaving techniques to imbue each level with a cohesive textile motif.

A selection of curated artworks from the Émile Hermès Collection and the Hermès Collection of Contemporary Photographs includes two 19th-century Japanese albums: L'art de faire des bouquets – Ikebana and Shokuba ko by Katsuyoshi Matoba, the first edition of an equestrian book dedicated to harnessing techniques. A new acquisition, Spring Mist, by artist Shihoko Fukumoto, creates visual harmony with the celestial oculus on the top floor.

Mona Sugata's theatrical installations adorn each of the four windows. Created to celebrate the store's opening and inspired by the house's annual theme, Venture beyond, the installations represent a journey through life that begins with the breath and expands to the world beyond. From the basement window, which evokes an underwater world, to ground level and then up to the sky, his work, titled My Breath is Where the World Begins, sparks curiosity and draws visitors inside.

Hermès invites loyal customers and new visitors to discover the house's timeless creations in a bold new store shaped by Nagoya's creative heritage.
