England captain Harry Kane has said he is “heartbroken” as the team returns to the UK from Germany after losing 2-1 to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
England suffered defeat when substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored a last-gasp winner in Berlin on Sunday.
Nico Williams scored Spain's opening goal in the second half, and despite Cole Palmer's equaliser, The Red finished victorious, taking home his fourth European Championship title.
Kane reacted to the defeat on Monday, posting on X: “We're heartbroken that we weren't able to achieve what we worked so hard to achieve. It was a long and tough tournament and I'm so proud of the lads and staff for making it to the final.
“In the end we didn't achieve our objective and we'll have to live with that, but as we always do, we'll pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and be ready to fight again in an England shirt.
“Thank you to all the fans who believed in us and supported us until the end!”
Gareth Southgate and the England players were applauded by fans as they left their hotel in Berlin but will not be greeted by supporters when they land as the FA announced the squad and staff will arrive back in the UK via a private terminal.
“We thank you, our amazing fans, for all your support throughout the tournament,” the FA wrote in a post on X.
