'Working Girl', the musical, is more than a 'crude imitation'

to the editor: As a producer in the creative space and a working woman, I attended “Working Girl” at La Jolla Playhouse with my family. We had a great time.

Theater critic Charles McNulty's review overlooked crucial context: the musical is still a work in progress (“'Working Girl', the musical, is a crude imitation of the music and style of the 80s (and the original movie) November 19). There was a response after the performance that provided insight into the development of the production, but this was not mentioned in the review.

Beyond that, I found McNulty's assessment puzzling. Leslie Rodríguez Kritzer was diabolical as Katharine, hilarious and evil at the same time. Joanna “JoJo” Levesque brought real meaning to Tess, with a beautiful, strong voice.

The choreography was thoughtful. Instead of acrobatic numbers, the cast danced as working women.

Still, the mostly female cast and crew put on a show worth celebrating. They deserved better than a review that reduced their work to “an imitation of '80s music and style.”
