Letters to the editor: Let's protect California's mountain lions with fences and crossings

To the editor: Thank you very much for the Article in support of fences, highway crossings and other artificial structures To help animals cross our streets safely. The number of dead animals is extremely sad. We don't know how many more are dragged through the undergrowth to die.

Humans have caused a lot of change on this planet, many of them devastating to other beings. The least we can do is drive more carefully and provide safer passage for all the animals out there trying to survive.

To the editor: On behalf of the many who support the idea of doing everything possible to protect the wildlife that still lives in the few open areas of Los Angeles, we are devastated to learn of the deaths that continue to occur from rodenticides and freeway strikes. Most are enthusiastic supporters of planned freeway crossings that will allow animals to feed, have room to move, and find suitable mates. Many are beginning to understand the need for strategic fencing, which will be another vital component of this plan.

As noted, it is imperative that all kinds of structures be built that can keep animals away from problem areas; one such vital facility is proper fencing along roads and bridges. Considering all the economic challenges society is currently facing, one can only hope that we can extend our compassion and our money to meet this particular need, so that our remaining wildlife can exist among us as safely as possible.
