to the editor: There is a much more cost-effective solution to re-electrify Altadena after the fire: go solar (“Altadena asked Edison to bury the power lines. Some fire victims say it could cost them $40,000.” February 17). For the same cost (or less) than Southern California Edison's reconnection fee, the homeowner could purchase a battery and solar system. Building a house is the perfect time to install solar energy and it would pay for itself in a few years. Why confirm a lifetime subscription to a utility by asking homeowners to pay for the opportunity to purchase electricity transferred through Edison's power lines?
The inhabitants of Altaden should take this opportunity to jump into the future as they rebuild. Politicians should help residents find ways to finance this leap with low-interest loans or grants.
Rebuild and restore beloved Altadena neighborhoods and lead the way to a solar-powered future for all of America.
