Washington Post criticized for distorting Israel-Hezbollah escalation on front page

The Washington Post is facing intense backlash for distorting the latest escalation between Israel and Hezbollah with a front page portraying the Jewish state as the aggressor.

The Iranian-backed terror group in Lebanon on Saturday launched its deadliest attack on Israel since the Oct. 7 attack on the northern Golan Heights town of Majdal Shams, resulting in at least 12 dead and dozens wounded, all of them children and teenagers who were playing on a soccer field.

On Monday's front page, The Post featured a large image of Israelis mourning the death of 11-year-old Alma Ayman Fakhr al-Din.

However, beneath the image, The Post ran the headline “Israel strikes targets in Lebanon,” a reference to Israel's retaliatory strikes against Hezbollah that occurred on Sunday.

The cover quickly went viral and sparked condemnation from the newspaper “Democracy Dies in Darkness.”

“The front page image of today's Washington Post is of a child killed by Hezbollah. Yet the front page headline — 'Israel Strikes Targets in Lebanon' — portrays Israel, not Hezbollah, as the aggressor,” New York Democratic Representative Ritchie Torres reacted in an interview with X.

“It's sad to see a newspaper that once had the caliber of the Washington Post reduced to this,” wrote Ruthless podcast host John Ashbrook.

“If you saw this photo and read the headline, you would naturally think that Israel was responsible for the deaths of 12 innocent Druze children on a soccer field,” said Newsweek contributor Joel M. Petlin.

“Israel is waging a war on two fronts: not against Hamas and Hezbollah, but against terrorists and the biased American media,” Petlin added.

The Post's cover even caught the attention of the Israel Defense Forces.

“Mourning relatives can be seen burying children killed by Hezbollah in the Madjal Shams massacre,” the IDF wrote on X. “If by chance you understood more than what the headline said, perhaps you are not the problem.”
