Two people were shot Monday morning at a Hollywood Hills mansion that had been rented for a Super Bowl party, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Police officers responded to the 1600 block of North Crescent Heights Boulevard after receiving reports of a shooting shortly after midnight. When they arrived, officers found two men in their 20s who had been shot, LAPD Officer Mike Lopez said. The men were taken to a hospital and were in stable condition, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.
Police ordered everyone inside the mansion to come out for questioning. Two people who were found trespassing on nearby property were detained for questioning in connection with the shooting, Lopez said, but it was unclear if they were arrested.
Officers found two loaded guns in a bag in the back of the rental property, Los Angeles police said. The shooting remains under investigation.
Recent listings for the property posted on Zillow and Craigslist say the six-bedroom mansion is fully furnished and available for short- and long-term rentals for $27,000 a month. The publicly traded real estate company did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the shooting.
Hollywood Hills residents have frequently complained to city officials about short-term rentals, particularly after the arrival of COVID-19. During the early days of the pandemic, clubgoers who were prohibited from partying in legal venues due to COVID restrictions flocked to short-term rental homes in the Hollywood Hills for pop-up parties.
In August 2020, Airbnb issued a temporary ban on all parties and events at its rentals and codified the ban in June 2022 as a permanent policy. The company said it has implemented several anti-partisan measures over the years to stem the flow of rental spaces being converted into party houses.
But preventing tenants from hosting parties in short-term rentals is easier said than done.
City officials vowed to crack down on party organizers who ignored the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health's warning about the spread of COVID-19. In August, the city sued a custom company that specializes in offering luxury properties for party rentals; Those parties led to more than 200 complaints from Hollywood Hills residents, according to city officials.
