A Santa Monica College employee is in critical condition after he was shot on campus Monday night in what police describe as a “workplace violence incident.”
The shooting took place at the Center for Media and Design, a satellite campus on Stewart Street, shortly before 10 p.m., according to a news release from Santa Monica College. The site is also home to public radio station KCRW.
The employee was taken to a hospital in critical condition and the shooter remains at large. Police said this was not a random attack and the incident was work-related. All Santa Monica College campuses will be closed Tuesday for the safety of the community, according to officials.
The Santa Monica Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting with assistance from campus and university police, authorities said. Erika Aklufi, public information officer for the Santa Monica Police Department, said there is no threat to the general public.
Authorities do not believe the shooter is still in Santa Monica and plan to release more information as the investigation continues.
“Today we will provide additional patrols around our schools to further our connection with our students and their parents,” Santa Monica police said in a news release.
Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Santa Monica Police Department at (310) 458-8491.
