Reds fan fails to catch Elly De La Cruz's home run in beer glass as Cincinnati wins fifth straight game

Thursday marked one year since Elly De La Cruz debuted in the Major Leagues.

The electrifying shortstop celebrated his anniversary by hitting a three-run home run over the right field wall during a game against the Chicago Cubs. De La Cruz's third inning heroics helped lead the Reds to a fifth straight victory.

The baseball exploded off De La Cruz's bat, reaching a top speed of 114.7 mph. While some fans bring a baseball glove to the stadium in case a foul ball or home run hits them, one Reds fan in the right field stands decided to use his beer glass.

But the fan's plastic cup didn't stand a chance and exploded as soon as the baseball made contact.

“That cup died like a hero,” joked one of the match announcers.

The mug was full of beer at the time, leaving some fans sitting nearby soaked in beer.

While the fan's hilarious, yet unfortunate attempt to catch the high-speed ball with a beer glass could end up serving as a warning to others in the future, another Reds fan was able to accomplish a similar feat last season.

Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon fouled out and a Great American Ballpark fan had his beer in the right place at the right time.

Some fans were unable to catch the ball with their bare hands, but the ball fell into one of the fan's beer glasses. The beer was still foaming on top when he took a sip.

While De La Cruz knew that Thursday's game marked the anniversary of his heralded debut, it didn't seem to be at the forefront of his mind during the game. He, too, had nothing extravagant planned after the game.

“I'm going to sleep,” he said.
