Oakland firefighters who responded to a call were robbed of their lives

Last week, during a rescue call, someone stole the Jaws of Life from Oakland firefighters, authorities said.

Firefighters had pulled out the tool during the call. After using it, firefighters discovered the equipment had been taken, according to an Oakland Police Department spokesman.

The hydraulic tool, used by emergency personnel after serious car accidents, opens or cuts through debris to rescue someone inside. Jaws of Life tools can be operated by one person and typically weigh about 50 pounds.

An Oakland police spokesman said his tool was stolen at approximately 7:15 p.m. Friday in the 1600 block of West Street.

Police have not released information about the suspects.

An Oakland Fire Department spokesman said the agency was working with police to recover the tool.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division at (510) 238-3728.
