A wildfire broke out Monday afternoon in the city of Corona, threatening dozens of homes, closing streets and prompting some evacuations, according to the Corona Fire Department.

He said the fire began to advance toward dozens of homes on Mandevilla Way, prompting firefighters to call for two water helicopters and other reinforcements. Later that afternoon, officials reported that the fire's spread had stopped and the fire had been contained to less than 12 acres, although 18-engine crews were on scene and continuing to extinguish hot spots.

No official evacuation orders were issued, but law enforcement officials asked residents living along Mandevilla Way, Via Blairo and Tampico Circle to evacuate out of an abundance of caution. Those orders were to remain in effect until 8 p.m. Monday.

Police also closed several major roads into the area, including Parkridge Avenue at Tesoro Way, Hidden Valley Parkway at Via Blairo and Corona Avenue at Gilmore Drive.

No homes were lost or injuries reported as of 5 pm Monday. The cause of the fire remains unknown and under investigation.

Firefighters plan to send more updates to residents on social media.
