A man yelled at a car and then attacked a bystander, San Francisco police say

San Francisco police are asking for help identifying a man accused of attacking a cognitively impaired person who filmed him yelling at a Waymo self-driving car, authorities said.

The man, between 25 and 30 years old, was yelling at a Waymo car in the 2300 block of Buchanan Street at 1 a.m. on July 5, according to a police department news release.

The video, provided by the victim to police and shared with the public, ends before the man allegedly attacks the other person, authorities said.

The victim suffered life-threatening injuries, including a skull fracture, police said. He was hospitalized after police provided him with medical assistance. His family told police he has cognitive impairment.

The man can be seen in the video blocking a Waymo vehicle, which was occupied by a passenger, according to the department's news release.

“You're no better than me,” the man can be heard telling the Waymo car in the video, which was posted online by San Francisco police.

The person filming the video tells the man to let the car pass. The suspect then walks away from the car, lunges at the victim several times and then assaults him, police said.

The attacker was a white male with facial hair. He was wearing a black jacket, a dark baseball cap with the back turned backwards, a blue shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers, and was carrying a white bag.

Police have asked anyone with information about the investigation to contact the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411.
