Tig Notaro's twin sons didn't know their mothers were gay

Tig Notaro's twin sons didn't know their mothers were gay until recently.

During an episode on June 4, The last show with Stephen Colbertthe 53 year old man Star Trek The actress revealed how her 7-year-old twin sons, Max and Finn, finally discovered that their parents were gay. After Colbert asked the actor how Pride Month was going for him so far, Notaro regaled him with the hilarious story.

At that point, Notaro and his wife Stephanie Allynne discovered they hadn't made the connection until one morning, when the family of four was driving to school together.

“His school is six minutes from our house, and within three minutes we were in the front seat of the car talking about something gay,” he recalled. “Our son Finn leans forward and says, 'Are you gay?'”

“I was so stunned because we've lived together almost eight years and I've been gay the whole time, even before!” she joked. “Then I thought, 'Yes! Are.' “I was very surprised.”

As expected, Notaro noted that it was not an easy conversation: “We are about three minutes from school and I start to explain to them what gay is. And then, as he explained it, I started to feel insecure and think: what if he doesn't like this?

But when he asked his children a simple question, all the worries he had disappeared.

“What do you think of what I just told you?” he asked his children, to which Finn responded, “Oh, I love my family.”

After the couple dropped their children off at school, Notaro and Alyne began speculating about how their children didn't know their mothers were gay. Notaro related: “We drop them off at school and say, 'bye-bye!' and we really went half a mile an hour, like 'How the hell don't our kids know we're gay?' Because, dare I say, we are also an iconic gay couple.”

He added: “I realized that even though there are pictures from our wedding day and they know they have two mothers, that doesn't mean they know what gay is.”

This isn't the first time Notaro's kids have caught her off guard, and the comedian admitted in Lives with Kelly and Markthat the first time her children saw one of her stand-up shows, they “interrupted” her.

“They booed me. They didn't want to interrupt me. They were fact checking,” Notaro joked with hosts and longtime couple Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. “They didn't think he was telling the truth. Then my son Max was sitting there and said, 'Yeah, right!'”

The drivers laughed and Notaro noted that the public did exactly the same.

“And that's what the public did! And he said, 'That's not true,'” Notaro shared. “And I started laughing and said, 'I'm sorry, my kids are here and they've never seen me do stand-up.' That was recent!

Notaro and Allyne tied the knot in October 2015 in Notaro's hometown of Pass Christian, Mississippi, with a star-studded guest list that included Sarah Silverman, Alicia Silverstone, Lake Bell and more. They welcomed their twins through a surrogate on June 26, 2016.
